Day 14: Finding Creativity

Creativity is everything. It is the irrational ingredient to a solution when logic fails. Simply, creativity makes things possible. Today, I plan to stimulate my creative juices and pump out some ideas for my business. And if you feel you're not the creative type, stop. You are. Creativity is the ability to view things in new ways [Dummies For Entrepreneurs, page 36]. Everyone has that ability in some shape or form, but obstacles like time, insecurities, and even stress can definitely get in the way - even making you believe you're not creative at all. All you have to do is get rid of those obstacles and practice. Practice? Here's how:

  1. Relax. Find a place you're comfortable in, whether at a coffee shop or on a bench at a park. For me, it helps clear my thoughts and remove any stressful thoughts of the 9-to-5. Stress is the enemy to creativity.
  2. Reinvent. Find mundane products and come up with at least 5 new ways to make it better. Activities like this force you to think outside the box [Dummies For Entrepreneurspage 33].
  3. Exercise your body. I found several articles about the correlation of exercise and cognitive functioning. If you Google it yourself, you'll find that regular exercise is actually a cognitive enhancer which leads to creativity. You don't have to sign up to a gym. Take a brisk walk everyday after work. Stretch in the morning. Dance on your lunch breaks. Do something physical to get your creativity flowing.
  4. Exercise your brain. Download an app called Fit Brains. Essentially, it's an app that's designed by neuroscientists where you to play "brain" games with the goal of improving memory, focus, and brain speed. You can even keep track of your progress and see the areas where you need improvement (i.e. visual, focus, memory, problem solving, and speed). I play these games in the morning on my iPad Mini, and it's really fun.
  5. Eat. I don't even care if there's a study about the correlation of food and creativity. It sure helps me! But don't eat junk food. 
  6. Make time. With a full-time job, it's hard for me to find time to be creative. I work half-days on Fridays, so I'm going to spend that extra time to do fun and creative activities like writing, making short films, or even take a train to Los Angeles and photograph the city. Whatever you do, just make time for it. Like stress, time is often an enemy of creativity. 

Everyone has the ability to be creative. Like faith, you simply have to believe it.
